Kocaeli, Marmara Bölgesi’nde bulunan ülkemizin önemli ticaret ve kültür merkezlerinden biridir. Kocaeli iline kültürel niteliğini kazandıran faaliyetlerden biri Değirmendere düzenlenen “Uluslararası Ahşap Heykel Sempozyumu”dur. Eski Yalı Mahallesi’nde bulunan eski evler restore edilerek, bu evlerin çevrelediği ve yüzyıllık çınarların bulunduğu alana 600 kişilik bir amfiteatr yapılmış olup, her yıl düzenlenen Uluslararası Ahşap Heykel Sempozyumu sonunda, parklar ile Çınarlık Meydanı’nda sergilenen heykeller büyük ilgi görmektedir.
